James’s Success Story

Where It All Began

James can pinpoint the moment everything changed.

At just 12 years old, after being violently assaulted and suffering a broken jaw, he was prescribed liquid hydrocodone to manage the pain. What no one realized at the time was that this prescription would mark the beginning of a decades-long battle with addiction.

Substance use was already normalized in James’s world. Growing up in Louisville, Kentucky, he was surrounded by addiction from an early age. What started with pain medication eventually escalated into marijuana, alcohol, benzodiazepines, and opioids. By his teenage years, James found himself caught in a cycle that quickly spiraled beyond his control.

“I barely remember what life was like without being an addict,” he shared.

When Addiction Took Over

As the years passed, addiction took nearly everything.

James endured repeated legal troubles, traumatic experiences, devastating personal loss, and multiple overdoses. He lost people he loved deeply, including his father and grandmother, who had been some of the most stabilizing forces in his life. He and his longtime partner experienced unimaginable heartbreak after losing their infant son just days after birth. Later, after years together and sharing a daughter, he lost that partner in a tragic car accident.

Grief became fuel for deeper substance use.

“There was a point where I didn’t care if I lived or died,” James said.

Even after surviving a near-fatal overdose that required multiple doses of Narcan and CPR to revive him, recovery did not happen overnight. Like many people facing addiction, James experienced setbacks, relapses, and moments when old habits pulled him back in.

A Turning Point Toward Recovery

What finally changed was a combination of accountability, treatment, and a shift in perspective.

While in jail and later in treatment, James began searching for answers. He read everything he could get his hands on, trying to make sense of the pain and loss he had experienced. But it wasn’t until he began seriously engaging in recovery that something clicked.

“I stopped asking why,” he said. “I realized it wasn’t up to me to have all the answers.”

That mindset became the foundation for rebuilding his life.

Finding Support That Made a Difference

Today, James says treatment has given him something he didn’t always believe was possible: stability, support, and hope.

One of the biggest differences in his current recovery journey has been feeling genuinely cared for by the team at MedMark. He describes the environment as welcoming, compassionate, and judgment-free, something that made it easier to stay engaged in treatment, especially during difficult moments.

“They care, not just about the treatment part, but about your life,” James said.

James also hopes his story helps challenge misconceptions about medication-assisted treatment and encourages others to seek help without shame.

Choosing Life Again

Today, James is engaged to be married and focused on building a healthier future.

While his journey has included extraordinary hardship, grief, and setbacks, he continues moving forward with purpose. He now sees recovery not as a sign of weakness, but as a decision to fight for a better life.

“This is life or death,” James said. “Everybody needs help sometimes. There’s nothing wrong with needing support.”

For James, recovery was not about becoming someone new.

It was about finally choosing to live.
