When Anthony Garcia became the first patient at MedMark Treatment Centers in Roswell, New Mexico, he never imagined that one day he would return as a team member, helping others navigate the same challenges he once faced.
In 2014, Anthony walked through the doors of a newly opened MedMark treatment center, becoming Patient #001. Today, more than a decade later, he serves as a Senior Peer Coordinator, using his personal experience with addiction and recovery to offer hope, encouragement, and understanding to patients beginning their own journeys.
His story is one of perseverance, second chances, and the life-changing impact of having someone believe in you, even when you struggle to believe in yourself.
Finding Hope After Years of Addiction
Originally from Roswell, New Mexico, Anthony spent approximately 15 years struggling with substance use. What began as experimentation and influence from those around him gradually developed into an addiction that affected nearly every aspect of his life.
Despite having a loving family, Anthony found himself increasingly isolated, struggling with legal troubles and watching his relationships suffer. As a husband and father, he knew his addiction was affecting the people he loved most.
“I was lost. I needed help,” Anthony recalled.
His struggles were further complicated by serious health challenges, including heart surgery and chronic pain. Although he wanted to change, finding a way forward was not easy.
Ultimately, his children became one of his greatest motivations. Anthony knew he wanted to be present for his family and build a different future.
Patient #001: The Beginning of a New Chapter
Anthony’s introduction to MedMark began with a simple sign announcing that a new treatment center would soon open in Roswell.
While driving his children to school, he regularly passed the building. Curious about the services it would provide, he began stopping by and speaking with a nurse who would become an important source of encouragement throughout his recovery.
Anthony continued checking in as the center prepared to open. Then, one day, the nurse shared the news he had been waiting to hear: the clinic was officially open.
That day, Anthony became the center’s very first patient.
Although entering treatment was an important first step, Anthony’s recovery was not immediate or without setbacks. He continued to struggle with substance use while receiving medication-assisted treatment, eventually recognizing that lasting change would require additional commitment and support.
Throughout those difficult years, Anthony remembers the encouragement he received from nurse and his counselor. Rather than giving up on him, they continued to remind him of his potential.
Their compassion left a lasting impression.
With support from his treatment team, family, and other individuals who entered his life, Anthony gradually began making meaningful changes. He committed himself to recovery, rebuilding relationships, and creating a future he once believed was out of reach.
Turning Personal Experience Into Purpose
As Anthony made progress in his recovery, he discovered something unexpected: his experiences could help others.
Through additional counseling, mentorship, and professional development, he began exploring opportunities to support individuals facing similar challenges.
Determined to turn his experience into a career, Anthony pursued certification as a peer support worker. After narrowly missing the passing score on his first attempt, he refused to give up. He continued studying, retook the exam, and successfully earned his certification.
He went on to serve as a mentor in treatment court and work as a crisis responder, supporting individuals experiencing difficult and often overwhelming circumstances.
Yet Anthony continued to feel a strong connection to the MedMark center where his own journey began.
He frequently returned to share his story and encourage patients. Eventually, an opportunity arose for him to join the team professionally.
What began as a personal journey toward recovery had become a calling to help others.
From Receiving Support to Providing It
Today, Anthony serves as a Senior Peer Coordinator at MedMark in Roswell, working alongside the same team that helped him take his first steps toward recovery.
His lived experience allows him to connect with patients in a way that is deeply personal. He understands the shame, uncertainty, and fear that can accompany addiction because he has experienced those feelings himself.
When patients walk through the doors, Anthony makes it his mission to help them feel welcomed, respected, and supported.
Whether he is offering encouragement, helping patients access resources, or simply listening when someone needs to talk, he approaches each interaction with compassion.
He also recognizes that recovery is rarely a straight path. For patients who experience setbacks, Anthony believes in offering encouragement rather than judgment.
He knows firsthand how much a few supportive words can mean to someone who is struggling.
For Anthony, being part of the MedMark team is about more than providing services. It is about helping people recognize their own potential and reminding them that their past does not have to determine their future.
A Full-Circle Journey of Hope
More than a decade after becoming Patient #001, Anthony’s life looks very different.
He has strengthened his relationships with his wife and children, built a meaningful career, and found purpose in helping others pursue recovery.
Perhaps most importantly, he has become the kind of person who once made such a difference in his own life: someone who sees hope in others, even when they cannot see it themselves.
Anthony credits the many people who supported him along the way, from his family and counselors to the healthcare professionals and mentors who encouraged him to keep moving forward.
Now, he hopes to extend that same encouragement to every patient he meets.
His journey is a reminder that recovery is possible, progress takes time, and the support offered today can create an impact that lasts for years.
From MedMark’s first patient in Roswell to a valued member of its treatment team, Anthony’s story is proof that recovery can open doors to a future filled with purpose, connection, and hope.
